Problems we solve
- Chock Liner® Installation
Case Study: Enhancing Application Performance
Industry: Maritime and Shipbuilding
Original Material: Steel Fairlead
New Material: Nylacast Chock Liner®
Introduction and Background:
In this case study, we examine the contrasting outcomes resulting from a Category 4 Typhoon that struck two container ships during their new building phase in September 2022. The key differentiator in their preparation was the installation of Chock Liner® on one vessel while the other proceeded without this application. Both vessels were undergoing construction simultaneously, sharing similar specifications and design elements. However, one of the vessels incorporated Chock Liner®— a Patented low friction technology to support safe and reliable moorings.
Incident Overview and Analysis:
The Category 4 Typhoon had a significant impact on both containerships. The vessel equipped with Chock Liner®, however, demonstrated a distinct resilience compared to its counterpart.
- Vessel with Chock Liner®: This containership experienced a notably lower degree of structural damage and maintained a higher level of stability during the typhoon. The Chock Liner® effectively absorbed and distributed the external forces, contributing to the vessel's enhanced structural integrity.
- Vessel with steel fairlead/fake fairlead replica: In contrast, the containership lacking Chock Liner® installation suffered more severe consequences. The absence of this protective measure resulted in increased vulnerability to the typhoon's forces, leading to greater structural damage and compromised stability
Key Findings and Conclusion:
The presence of Chock Liner® significantly contributed to preserving the structural integrity of the vessel during the typhoon. The vessel equipped with Chock Liner® demonstrated superior stability in comparison to its counterpart without this protective feature. Chock Liner® played a crucial role in damage mitigation, absorbing and distributing external forces, minimizing the extent of damage incurred by the vessel. This case study highlights the importance of Chock Liner® installation as an effective measure in mitigating the impact of adverse weather conditions, such as a typhoon, on containerships during the newbuilding phase. The vessel equipped with Chock Liner® showcased a higher level of resilience and structural integrity, underlining the significance of such preventative measures in maritime construction.
