DMU Racing, sponsored by engineering solution provider Nylacast have recently returned from a successful competition at the prestigious Silverstone Race Track.
The event which took place the week following the 2014 British Formula 1 GP reigned in student race teams from around the globe to test and race their individual race cars. The DMU Racing team consists of students from De Montfort University’s engineering faculty who spend valuable time outside of their studying to design, build and test their team car from start to finish. The DMU Racing team entered the IMechE Formula Student competition for the first time last year but failed to get through the initial testing stages to reach the track racing section of the competition.
At the weekend, the engineering students were delighted to get past the static inspections (including the vehicle being tested on the tilt table) to put their single-seat car to the test around the Silverstone circuit. They may not have completed the endurance challenge of completing 22 laps of the track plus a driver change after 11 laps – an engine mapping issue saw their car finish after a lap and a half but it was a huge step forward. We got on really well, said team founder Ross Deacon, we met the target that we had set ourselves to reach the dynamic events part of it. We got strongly praised for what we had improved from last year. Everybody was coming over to look at how we had improved our car. There is a lot of excitement in the team for the next year or two because we know what things we can improve. We are concentrating on getting a lot more sponsorship to help us work on becoming more competitive”.
Nylacast Marketing Manager, Junaid Makda commented, “Nylacast are very proud and impressed with the performance of DMU Racing this year, the students have shown major levels of improvement and the vehicle itself looks outstanding, a true reflection of the hard work, dedication and efforts which the students and faculty staff have put into the team. We look forward to continuing our sponsorship of DMU Racing, which is part of our long term commitment to the continuous development of People, Polymers and Passion.”
